TEXAS GRADUATED LICENSES  THREE STAGES

 

Stage one: Instructional Permit

 

To obtain a permit, a teen must:

a.     Be at lease 15 years old.

b.     Must be enrolled and have completed 1st three classes (six hours) of a state approved driver education program.

c.     Obtain parental or guardian consent

d.     Have passed a written signs test, rules test & a vision test.

e.     Pay a statutory fee.

Once a permit is obtained, a teen must:

a.     Hold the instructional permit for at lease six months.

b.     Drive with an adult 21 or older who has been licensed for a minimum of 1 year. (If the adult is occupying the seat next to the driver.)

c.      Not drink & drive. Any measurable alcohol could result in a 2 month to 2-year license revocation for drivers under 21.

d.      Drive with adult supervision. Two violations of failure to drive with an adult supervision can result in the suspension of the instruction permit for 90 days to 1 year.

 

Stage two: Provisional License

To obtain a provisional license, a teen must:

a.     Be at least 16 years old.

b.     Complete the six month waiting period for holding an instructional permit.

c.     Complete a state approved classroom and in-car driver education program.

d.      Pass an in-car driving test administered by the Texas Department  of Public Safety or approved driver education  school.

e.     Pay statutory fee.

  

Restrictions for the first  six month of a provisional license:

a.     Passenger restriction- a teen may not drive with more than one passenger under the age of 21. (Unless the passengers under 21 are family members.)

b.     Late night hours restriction- a teen may not drive between midnight and 5am unless accompanied by a licensed driver 21 or older. (Exceptions may be permitted for employment, school related activities, and/or medical emergency.

 

A teen is subject to a license suspension of 90 days to 1 year if cited for 2 or more moving violations within 12 months.

 

Stage 3: Full Provisional License

 

Six months after receiving a provisional license, teens may obtain a full provisional license. The above restrictions do not apply.
